Lots of full disc images today - Alan Friedman put up a very nice hi-res image - make sure to click through to his full size version!!

Today I finally was able to get first light with my new Lunt. I made a mosaic with my DMK31 camera. The bottom picture is a mosaic using my 2.5x Powermate for a total focal length of 1400mm. First impressions is very good, I really love the details I'm getting from this scope, and the views through my bino is phenomenal."

Todays Highlights - 7-29-12

Alessandro Bianconi posted some amazing Hi-Res white light images taken with his C14.  This one in particular seems to jump off the page with its 3D feel:

"I quickly set up my Lunt on my Portamount II since thunderstorms were on the horizon and grabbed a few quick videos of the proms. Didn't have a lot of time to adjust the exposures but was able to get surface and proms. Great activity!"

M6 Flare Observation

I can already tell this is going to be a great hobby and it will keep me busy.

While observing this afternoon, around 5:00 (I wasn't keeping track of the time unfortunately), I saw a localized brightening near several prominences.  I was surprised, as the area became nearly white and several minutes later faded back to a deep orange as seen through my Lunt LS60PT.

In short order, I posted over at the CN forums and asked if anyone else saw this, and lo and behold, one of the members not only saw it, but managed to image the flare.

Additional images from members of www.cloudynights.com forums

The next images were taken by members of the forum at www.cloudynights.com.  I'll be posting an amalgamation of photos from there and around the web.

I will *always* give full credit to the original photographer and include details as they are available - most times this includes the settings used, and the region of interest as well as their comments.  I also will include a click-through link on the image to go to the source positing or website.

Enjoy!!

HelioFocal - a concentrated study of our star

...and thus begins a new endeavor.  The study of our Sun.  My reason is simple.  See the image below:

It was these images that showed me how much detail exists on the surface of our star.  Its always changing...

There will be articles and links, images and moves as I find solar related items.  See the "Escher's Happenings" blog for more info.
